Day 1 : Streets Of Zamalek

Horus Hotel on the 4th Floor , Ismail Mohammed
Working on only a couple of hours of sleep, I woke up bright and early to eat breakfast.  As I made my way down to the cafe area I was greeted by a group of students and Prof. Denis Sullivan who had just arrived at the Hotel by the front desk.  The Turkish Airlines crew had finally arrived, and some looking a bit agitated, a few very excited (probably since they were finally liberated from the airport) others just worn out.  Only a couple of them had their luggage.  As people settled in or napped, I ate some breakfast and talked to whoever else wanted to eat.  After that I took a walk with Prof. Sullivan and Owen, one of the TA crew, as he introduced us to some areas in the neighborhood.  Prof. Sullivan and I had attempted to walk outside just a few minutes ago but it had started to rain (very light showers that lasted for probably 10 minutes --I would learn that it was a good thing I didn't bring an umbrella as they are neither used or really necessary--score for the less packing!)  We saw some important landmarks that would guide us to some important shops and places, among them: Cafe Noar, "The Ugly Building" --only Prof. Sullivan and his students know this, pleas don't go around Zamalek asking for "The Ugly Building," 26th July Street, Brazil Street and countless embassies.
Our landmark: "The Ugly Building"

Umm Kalsoom Square
With the help of Prof. Sullivan I was able to get a phone.  Now I had an Egyptian number.  I was really going to be in Egypt for a month! These were just some re-assuring signs.

When I went back, I relaxed a bit and then went on the second "tour" where a couple more people joined in.

I'm excited about being in Egypt, I'm sure there is lots to learn, and the rest of the month will be a great adventure.
